Success at the FINAT Awards!

We are delighted to have won a top award at this year’s FINAT Awards in the ‘self-promotion’ category, for our butterfly design entitled ‘Touching Beauty’. MD Paul Clayton went to the annual FINAT congress on 11 June 2015 in Amsterdam, to receive the award.

The long established and respected FINAT Awards showcase the best in self-adhesive label printing and print and converting accuracy. Awards are given in the main segments where self-adhesive labels are used: alcoholic beverages, food, household, industrial, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, security labels, self-promotion and booklet/coupon labels, plus for the major reel-fed print processes.

Our label design clearly impressed the judging panel, who said: “This label shows off to perfection the abilities of Royston Labels. On one label they have managed to include flexo and screen printing with satin cold foil, spot lamination, spot varnish and a raised screen varnish amongst other techniques. The end result is a delightfully delicate rendering of a butterfly which does the company credit.”
You can see the design on an earlier blog and also find out how we produced it here.

All winning entries will be on show at Labelexpo Europe 2015, which takes place September 29 to October 2 in Brussels.

Small label, big impact

Royston Labels has recently produced ‘peel and re-seal’ label for the new SkinFuel range of products from male grooming band, Wingman. The label provides details of their partnership with Help for Heroes, where Wingman has pledged that 5p from every SkinFuel and 3-in-1 shower gel product sold will be donated to the Charity.

To provide a suitable solution for Wingman, we opted for a peel and re-seal device as a great way to maximise information in one place, without detracting from the SkinFuel range - small label, big impact.

Allowing for multiple opening and resealing, the 2-ply layer mechanic can be utilised as an alternative to sleeves or using a top & bottom label, enabling information to be incorporated in one applied label.

Wingman’s founder Stu Jolly said: “We’re enormously proud to be associated with Help for Heroes and it is a partnership we can see lasting for the foreseeable future. Having the Help for Heroes peel and reseal labels on the SkinFuel range are a very effective yet simple solution, providing the consumer with an instant statement of our intentions and allegiance.”

Metamorphosing beauty

To promote our innovations, here is a label design which provides another example of Royston Labels' technical expertise and utilisation of multi-process printing in developing innovative packaging for brands. Call us on 01763 212020 to find out more.

Here's how we did it...
    • Silver foil was printed onto a white synthetic substrate.
    • A set of colours were then printed over the top of the foil to produce a high metallic finish.
    • The high quality of our Cdi plates allow us to really match the details of the thousands of tiny scales which form a butterfly’s wings.
    • A specialised matt textured synthetic substrate was then applied to mimic the texture of a butterfly’s wings.
    • Clear silk screen varnish was then applied over the abdomen and wings to give a three dimensional appearance.
    • High quality gloss silk screen with a strong pigmented ink was used to print the company name and logo.
    • Finally a newly invented sparkled satin spot varnish was added.

Label innovation to maximise on-shelf appearance

All brands will say that the competition for product differentiation and ‘shelf-shout’ is relentless. Finding that edge to enhance brand image and maximise on-shelf appearance has become more critical than ever; it’s no surprise therefore that label manufacturers have emerged as the real packaging innovators and are consistently going the extra mile to help brands sell more product.

Take the case of men’s skincare brand, Bulldog - an established, successful business looking to increase their market share in the highly competitive retail world of ‘men’s grooming’. Already sporting a visually strong and appealing brand style, Bulldog were after that little bit extra and asked us for ideas.

Following discussion and collaboration, the ‘topper’ label was created - a clear rigid marketing device that can stand up naturally (in this case on the crimp end of the product - see photo) and which is cut to a special shape to enhance the overall aesthetics of the label.

The label is affixed to the product by adhesive used on a small part of the design, thereby ensuring that it remains perfectly clean and intact even with consumer handling. The label is also capable of being removed from the product without leaving residue and can be decorated in 5 colours to an extremely high quality.

Although being used for a tube in Bulldog’s case, as an innovation to enhance on-shelf presence, this label concept has an application on almost any packaging component, such as sachets or even the carton itself. And despite only one side on the topper being used on Bulldog’s product, it is possible to print on both sides of the label, thereby allowing for the addition of more marketing messages as required.

Bulldog are delighted with the innovation.

    Food Labelling

It seems that no sooner than the new EU food labelling rules came into force last December , then the Shadow Health Secretary, Andy Burnham, has suggested that a future Labour Government would aim to simplify food packaging on the grounds of over complexity.

Commenting on the rumours from certain political circles and putting the current situation regarding food labelling into perspective, Phil Dalton, head of regulatory, legal, at Sun Branding Solutions, has recently given his take on developments for Packaging News. Read his comments here.

Royston Labels will be monitoring the situation pre and post-election and will update you on any food labelling news through our website and social media channels.

In the meantime, if you wish to discuss any aspect of food labelling, please call us on 01763 212020.
